America Online Inc. Launches AOLMobile.com

A few weeks ago, AOL debuted their new WAP Portal. Today, AOL launched AOLmobile.com.
“The new AOLMobile.com site is all about personalization and simplification. We designed it so that our members, registered users and web users alike can easily learn about the phones, services, features and accessories that are available and best suited to meet their needs,” said Rajive Mathur, vice president, AOLMobile.com, America Online, Inc. “It’s also a ‘mobile home base’ where users can easily manage their wireless service accounts.”
I signed up to see what services they had to offer and was rather impressed. After easily selecting my carrier and phone, I was able to set up free text alerts (entertainment, sports, breaking news) and forward my IM to my phone. They also promote their “pay for” services such as MapQuest Traffic, and of course their ringtone and wallpaper store.
I also found a useful how-to on accessing your AOL email from your WAP 2.0 capable phone. (Oh, don’t worry, I don’t use AOL for anything other than IM.) Also, they provide Mobile101, a primer about mobile phone features and calling plans. I assume that most AOL users (like most cellphone users) don’t know the capabilities of their cell phones; such as their ability to access the mobile-optimized web. At the very least, AOLmobile should help narrow the knowledge-gap between cell phone nerds like me(us) and
the casual AOL/cell phone user.
