Zingy Acquires Vindigo

August 23rd, 2005 | by amarfresh |

Mobile content provider (ringtones and wallpapers) Zingy, has acquired Vindigo.

Zingy has content distribution agreements with more than 400 partners and 4,000 songwriters and artists. Vindigo is best known for information and subscription services such as the award-winning Vindigo CityGuide. With the acquisition of Vindigo, Zingy content will now be available throughout every major category of mobile media: personalization: Ringtones, ringbacks and wallpapers, Entertainment: Action, adventure and word games, Information: The New York Times, MapQuest, CelebrityNow and Vindigo CityGuide, Community: FotoShare, mobile chat and dating .

Amongst other reasons, I’m sure a main motivator for the acquisition was Vindigo’s access to Verizon’s (US) walled-garden. Vindigo already sells mobile content on the Verizon Get-it-Now portal. While the ringtone and wallpaper business is a certain moneymaker for Zingy, the acquisition of Vindigo appears to be their crown jewel. Vindigo, unlike the ringtone and wallpaper business, brings community, real-content, real-information to Zingy’s mix. Not to mention a whole new demographic and expertise in smart phones and PDA software and technology.
