FYI: Full Music Tracks are Not Ringtones (even if you buy them from Cingular)

I found this post on the Cingular customer service forums. I think it is a good example of the confusion in the marketplace regarding mp3 phones, music downloads and ringtone downloads. As consumers turn to mp3 phones these types of “complaints” are sure to increase.

I am very frustrated! I bought the music bundle to download music onto my phone so that I could use it as an MP3 player, but also so I could use my favorite songs as ringtones. It will not allow me to set MyMusic as a ringtone. Any ideas why it won’t or ways to get around this without purchasing an actual ringtone. I spent $40 on the music bundle! Why should I have to buy ringtones too?

Why? Because the cellcos want you to! Why would they cannibalize one source of revenue when they don’t have to?

But I couldn’t agree more. I sympathize with this user; and users to follow. Music is music; whether its in your iPod, phone or played when your phone “rings”. What really differentiates mp3 music from a ringtone? Seems to me it is mostly price, delivery, size (smaller) and quality (lower). Basically, a ringtone costs much more than a full track download on a per second cost analysis. Why should anyone who downloads a full track need to purchase a corresponding ringtone?
(Because the cellcos want you to!)

I digress.
